The Derwent Valley Line

The line opened in 1849 after parliamentary assent was granted in 1846. Running from a junction with the Midland Railway at Ambergate to Rowsley north of Maltlock, the company having run out of money by the time it reached this point. The line was leased jointly by the Midland Railway and the LNWR and, in spite of determined opposition from the latter, the Midland succeeded in reaching Manchester in 1867.

Matlock Bath capitalised on its reputation as a tourist town with the appellation Little Switzerland.

The line was leased jointly by the Midland Railway and the LNWR and, in spite of determined opposition from the latter, the Midland succeeded in reaching Manchester in 1867.

For the purpose of this page we are only interested in the Ambergate to Rowsley section.

Originally twin track throughout, today the line has been paired down to single track, operated by a signaless line token drawn by the driver at Amblegate and replaced when leaving, creating a poor hourly service at best.

The RRA advocate that by reinstating the access loop off the main line and disconnecting the branch line and reinstating the second track or just passing loops at stations a much more frequent driverless hybrid light rail system could be created with connections to trains calling at Ambergate on the main line.

This could then be extended on to Buxton if the Peak Railway could be persuaded to relocate to the High Peak Railway alignment or amalgamate with another local heritage railway.

Sadly a lot of these trails are excluded from walkers and cyclists of lesser abilities. Easy access to the Monsal Trail. Those who are less agile or do not have much stamina still benefit from what exercise they can achieve and could walk or ride between just two stations and return by train. Thereby truely opening up the countryside to all.
